Editorial Assistant, Music Teacher and Drama & Theatre

Posted: Feb 10, 2021

The Company

Mark Allen is a leading and dynamic media and information group. Our mission is to connect specialist audiences with critical information. We produce content for our ever-growing audiences through print, digital, events, and conferences.

The position

We are looking to recruit an Editorial Assistant working across the Music Teacher and Drama & Theatre brands (part of MA Education) covering print, digital and online. Music Teacher is the UK’s only publication for both classroom and peripatetic music teachers. Drama & Theatre is an invaluable resource for primary, secondary, private, and extracurricular workshop teachers. Both titles are written for teachers by teachers and experts in the field, ensuring they are up to date with the latest news, reviews and developments in the music and drama education communities.

This busy and varied role would suit an Arts/Humanities graduate with journalism experience, or a Journalism graduate with an interest in the Arts.

This role will normally be based in an Excellent office at the group’s head office in south London. However, currently most people are working remotely.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for producing the Listings and News pages and for writing at least one feature and review per issue.
  • Have the opportunity to carry out interviews for features and Q&A pages.

  • Generate content for social media (Facebook and Twitter).
  • Write news stories and event posts for the websites.
  • Promote new issues and supplements.
  • Follow forums and Facebook groups of drama and music teacher interest.
  • Format print magazine content and schemes of work once uploaded to the website.

  • Work with the magazine editor to commission the review section (books, performances, workshops, web resources, apps, scripts etc.) and certain other regular features.
  • Collate and send out review material to contributors.

Magazine and supplements production:

  • Proofread and sub-edit raw copy from contributors, write headlines, standfirsts, captions, select pull quotes.
  • Manage the process with design (making sure Editor knows when content is ready to look at, then passing this to design with all relevant materials needs – high-res images, page layout instructions).
  • Source images for all articles.

  • Update databases.
  • Designated phone contact for any queries.
  • Email correspondence.
  • Take minutes during Executive meetings.

  • Attend events: Music & Drama Education Expos, TheatreCraft, press nights.

Drama & Theatre produces 6 issues per year and Music Teacher 12. There are also supplements to both magazines.

  1. Arts/Humanities/Media/Journalism degree.
  2. Strong organisational skills.
  3. Desire to quickly learn and develop new skills.
  4. Comfortable using online platforms and learning how to make basic edits in InDesign.
  5. Good communicator.
  6. Team player.
  7. Experience in writing and/or editing for student publication or blog.
  8. Interest in arts and education.
  9. Social media experience.
