Mark Allen Group celebrates 25 years of success

The Mark Allen Group was established on April 5th 1985 following a management buy-out from International Thomson. With two journals – British Journal of Hospital Medicine, which the company still publishes, and the now-defunct GP journal The Physician – Mark Allen set up office in Lavender Hill, south London, with two other staff.

Since then the company has prospered, diversified and expanded. Although its core is still in health care, it now boasts a very successful education division as well as interests in business-to-business and special interest consumer titles. The Group currently has 36 print journals and magazines, three book divisions, a number of successful websites, a very active conference division, a specialist travel company, and a design studio.

Starting from three staff, the Group has grown to employ 130 people in two locations: its HQ in a large renovated church in Herne Hill, London, and its second office in Dinton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire.

On the occasion of this 25th anniversary, the senior management of the Group is undergoing some significant changes in order to position the group for future development. Ben Allen, a qualified commercial lawyer who has been working in the group in a senior capacity for five years, has today assumed the new role of Chief Operating Officer. His primary focus will be the day-to-day running of the group’s largest company, MA Healthcare. Taking over Ben's former position as Managing Director of MA Education will be Matt Govett, previously Sales Director and Publisher in MA Education.

Mark Allen is from today adopting the role of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman and will focus on strategy, conferences, new launches, acquisitions and the Wiltshire arm of the business.

Mark Allen said: “We are now a very successful and profitable company. Despite the recession we have enjoyed our best-ever year. Our success is a direct consequence of the highly talented team that we have assembled and the quality of our products.

“We have a culture that gives gifted and committed people the opportunity to progress rapidly and the company has an atmosphere that is friendly and participatory.

“Our aim now is to ensure that we continue to grow and develop the company so that in a 25 years time the Group is still around, even more successful than ever.”
